Shiny Objects
I was sitting at home, casually messaging a friend in the UK when she mentioned chasing shiny objects - a phrase we’ve all heard before.
"Stop chasing shiny objects."
It's something we've been subconsciously conditioned to believe - that shiny objects are distractions, illusions, things that pull us away from where we’re supposed to be. But as I sat with those words, I couldn’t help but ask myself...
What if those shiny objects are actually there for a reason?
What if they catch our attention because they’re meant to?
The stars, diamonds, even the bling accessories we’re drawn to - they shimmer because they are meant to be noticed.
And what if the real key is not in avoiding them altogether, but in learning to be selective with which ones we chase?
Choosing the Right Shiny Objects
Every single shiny object I’ve ever gone after has led me to something - a lesson, a person, an opportunity, a conversation I was meant to have. Even the ones that, at first, felt like "mistakes."
But what if they weren’t mistakes?
What if they were stepping stones?
Maybe the real lesson isn’t in avoiding the chase, but in learning how to choose.
Before reaching for that next shiny thing, ask yourself:
Is this in alignment with who I am and where I’m going?
Is this something I truly need right now, or just a momentary distraction?
Does this feel true to my values and what I deeply desire?
What is the short-term pull vs. the long-term impact of this choice?
Because not all shiny objects are distractions. Some are doorways.
Maybe the right shiny object leads you to the right person, the right opportunity, or the right realization that shifts everything. Maybe, behind it, is the lesson or the gold nugget you needed to move forward.
The Power of Self-Awareness
The more self-aware we become - the more we understand our own wants, needs, and desires - the more we can navigate through all the shiny things with confidence. Because self-awareness isn’t just knowing what we want, it’s trusting ourselves enough to make decisions that align with it - without hesitation, without second-guessing, without needing external validation.
We stop grasping at every single thing that glimmers in front of us, and instead, we choose wisely. We learn to trust our intuition to guide us toward the one’s worth picking up.
Because when we change our internal narrative - when we believe that we already have everything we need within us - the shiny objects we chase will no longer feel like distractions. They’ll feel like confirmation.
So, maybe the question isn’t “Should I stop chasing shiny objects?”
Maybe the question is “Which ones are truly worth stopping for?”
What if the next shiny object you notice isn’t a distraction, but a door?
What if the opportunity you’ve been waiting for has already been placed in front of you - waiting for you to recognize it?
Choose wisely. Trust yourself. And when you see the right one? Go after it.
Take a moment today to reflect - what "shiny object" have you been drawn to lately? Is it a distraction, or could it be an opportunity in disguise? Trust yourself to know the difference.
